———— Technical FAQ

Base Oil Re-Refining Plant FAQs

Answers to common questions about feedstock suitability, base oil quality, recovery rate, process selection, utility requirements and EPCM project delivery

The quality of regenerated base oil depends on the feedstock characteristics and refining process configuration. Through advanced pretreatment, high vacuum distillation, and purification technologies, VBOLT systems effectively remove water, impurities, and degraded components to produce stable regenerated base oil suitable for industrial applications.

A Waste Oil to Base Oil Plant can recover valuable lubricating base oil fractions from suitable used engine oil, hydraulic oil, gear oil, transmission oil, compressor oil, and other industrial waste lubricating oils.

However, not all waste oils are suitable for the same re-refining process. Feedstocks containing excessive moisture, solvents, chlorinated compounds, metals, additives, or other contaminants may require additional pretreatment or may be unsuitable for a particular plant configuration.

VBOLT evaluates feedstock characteristics, including viscosity, water content, contamination levels, metal content, and distillation properties, to determine the appropriate pretreatment technology, distillation configuration, and expected product recovery.

A representative feedstock analysis is recommended before finalizing equipment selection and process design.

VBOLT provides customized waste lubricating oil re-refining solutions based on production capacity, feedstock characteristics, operating requirements, target base oil quality, and project investment.

The main technologies and configurations include:

  • Batch Dual-Reactor Distillation: A flexible solution for small- and medium-scale waste oil recycling projects. It processes defined quantities of feedstock through separate operating cycles and allows adaptable production arrangements.
  • Continuous Tubular-Furnace Distillation: Designed for steady industrial production using controlled feed rates, continuous heating, vacuum distillation, and integrated fraction recovery.
  • High Vacuum Thin-Film Distillation: An advanced evaporation and separation technology that reduces high-temperature residence time, enhances heat transfer, and supports the recovery of valuable high-boiling lubricating oil fractions.

Batch and continuous operation describe processing modes, while high vacuum thin-film distillation describes a separation technology that can be integrated into a continuous processing system.

VBOLT selects or combines appropriate technologies according to required throughput, feedstock analysis, product specifications, utility availability, energy consumption, and overall project economics.

High Vacuum Thin-Film Distillation is used to recover valuable lubricating oil fractions while limiting excessive thermal exposure during waste oil re-refining.

Operating under high vacuum reduces the evaporation temperature required for a given separation. Thin-film evaporation improves heat transfer and reduces the residence time of oil on heated surfaces.

Its key engineering advantages include:

  • Reduced Thermal Degradation: Shorter high-temperature residence time helps limit undesirable oil decomposition.
  • Efficient Heat Transfer: Thin-film formation enhances thermal contact between the oil and heated surface.
  • Lower Coking Risk: Controlled heating and reduced residence time can help minimize thermal cracking, fouling, and coke formation.
  • Controlled Fraction Recovery: Operating pressure, evaporation temperature, and feed rate can be adjusted to support the desired separation.
  • Continuous Processing Capability: Thin-film evaporation can be integrated into continuous industrial re-refining systems.

Actual performance depends on feedstock composition, film formation, vacuum stability, surface temperature, and operating conditions.

VBOLT integrates high vacuum thin-film distillation with feedstock pretreatment, vacuum dehydration, condensation, fraction recovery, and downstream refining technologies to develop complete base oil recovery solutions.

The base oil recovery rate depends on feedstock composition, moisture content, light hydrocarbon fractions, additives, heavy residues, and the selected distillation and refining processes.

Base oil recovery is generally calculated as:

Base Oil Recovery (wt%) = Recovered Base Oil Mass ÷ Waste Oil Feed Mass × 100%

The calculation must specify whether the feedstock mass is measured on an as-received or dry basis, since moisture content can significantly affect the reported recovery percentage.

Important factors influencing recovery include:

Water and light hydrocarbon content.

Additives, metals, and mechanical impurities.

Feedstock boiling-range distribution.

Distillation cut points and separation efficiency.

Heavy residue formation and process losses.

Downstream purification requirements.

VBOLT develops project-specific material balances to estimate recovered base oil fractions, light products, water, residues, and process losses.

For preliminary engineering, recovery targets are established according to representative feedstock analysis and the selected process configuration. Final recovery targets and performance guarantees, where applicable, are defined in the project-specific technical proposal and agreed testing conditions.

  1. Can Re-Refined Base Oil Meet API Group I or Group II Specifications?

Yes. Used lubricating oil can be re-refined into base oil products targeting API Group I or Group II specifications, provided that the feedstock characteristics and selected upgrading processes are suitable.

According to the API base stock classification system:

API Group I: Saturated hydrocarbons below 90% and/or sulfur content above 0.03 wt%, with a viscosity index from 80 to below 120.

API Group II: Saturated hydrocarbons of at least 90%, sulfur content not exceeding 0.03 wt%, and a viscosity index from 80 to below 120.

High vacuum distillation and thin-film evaporation are primarily separation technologies. They recover valuable lubricating oil fractions but do not independently guarantee Group II product quality.

Depending on feedstock characteristics, downstream refining technologies may include:

Adsorption refining for removal of certain color bodies and impurities.

Solvent extraction to improve selected base oil properties.

Hydrofinishing, hydrotreating, or other appropriately designed upgrading processes to achieve more demanding product specifications.

The final product classification depends on verified sulfur content, saturated hydrocarbon content, viscosity index, and other applicable quality requirements.

VBOLT evaluates the required refining route during project engineering and determines achievable product specifications according to the selected equipment configuration and laboratory verification.

Yes. Chongqing Vbolt Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (VBOLT) provides integrated engineering, equipment manufacturing, and project implementation solutions for waste lubricating oil re-refining and base oil recovery plants.

Depending on the agreed project scope, VBOLT's engineering services and technical deliverables may include:

  • Feedstock & Process Engineering: Feedstock evaluation, process route selection, technical specifications, and process design basis.
  • Process Documentation: Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), material balances, and heat balance calculations.
  • Equipment Engineering & Manufacturing: Process vessel design, distillation equipment, vacuum systems, heating equipment, condensers, and associated systems.
  • 3D Plant Layout & Piping Engineering: Equipment arrangement, piping layouts, maintenance access, and installation planning.
  • Automation & Control: PLC/HMI control systems, instrumentation, process alarms, safety interlocks, and optional SCADA integration.
  • Procurement & Project Coordination: Equipment procurement coordination, manufacturing supervision, and project schedule management.
  • Installation & Commissioning Support: Installation guidance, commissioning assistance, technical documentation, and operator training.
  • EPCM Services: Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management services according to the project execution strategy.

VBOLT develops customized plant solutions based on required processing capacity, feedstock characteristics, target base oil grades, available utilities, local site conditions, and project investment objectives.

For a preliminary technical proposal, customers are encouraged to provide their feedstock analysis, required processing capacity (TPD), target base oil specifications, and project location.

Final equipment supply boundaries, engineering deliverables, on-site services, and performance commitments are defined in the project-specific technical proposal and contract.
